bullfrog chokes to death on a chipmunk

A Redditor reports this ribbeting story:

"Opened my pool... saw a HUGE bullfrog swimming in the water... I had been saving chipmunks from drowning all week (because they weren't used to the pool cover being off)... came back the next day, bullfrog wasn't moving and was dead at the bottom of the pool... BECAUSE HE CHOKED ON A CHIPMUNK."

The bull frog probably thought he was onto an easy free meal but his eyes were bigger than his furry lunch date.

Given frogs will pretty much eat anything that moves (usually smaller fry like insects) the frog would have literally jumped at the chance to eat some delicious chipmunk meat.

I for one, will never toad-ally forget this picture! Are they sure frog didn't die of two much chlorine in the water? Maybe they need a test kit for that.

Never give up!

lizard tries to escape snake

It's curtains for this lizard that's been nearly eaten whole by this King snake!

Well, at least this alligator lizard doesn't think so and is making one last effort for freedom by biting the snake back!

We wonder how long the lizard held out and if he was able to sink any teeth into the skin of the snake. It would be amusing for the snake if he couldn't finish his meal due this last ditch escape effort!

Hold up, I actually found some comment by the photographer on what actually happened:

P.S. I watched the lizard for quite some time, and as I walked away, the kingsnake began slowly withdrawing from its prey. Just goes to show, if you refuse to accept that you've been beaten, you just might be able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Literally."

crab being eaten by an otter
Crabelicious!
I've always thought otters were pretty cute little critters. They are just so lively - they jump and dive with such wild abandon - they are also known as mischievous buggers to - the Zoos that sometimes hold them have a devil of a time trying to contain them!

So, the drill here at Animals Eating Animals is to show pictures of exactly that, and today it's otters eating  eating crabs and other bounty from the sea.

Above is a dead cute otter eating a crab that he managed to snaffle from the ocean floor. The crab gets eaten whole - it makes me wonder if they would enjoy dining on some sushi?

Below is an otter hogging out on a clam. How do they get to clam meat you wonder? I recall seeing a documentary once where the otter grabbed a stone and whilst floating on its back, it smashed the shellfish onto the stone to crack it and let the tasty food out. I'm not sure if the below otter did this or simply used it's jaw or claws to prise the clam open.

Is it me or does that above otter look kind of like an Ewok from Return of the Jedi?

Fish is also a large part of the otter's diet.

Not all Otters have the luxury of living in the wild, eating whatever crustaceans they can get their sharp little claws on. Some otters were silly enough to get caught by humans and put into zoos. There's some cute little bastards at the Wellington Zoo for instance.

Once those otters are detained, they need to be entertained or they go nuts and try to escape. So here's an example of what Zoos do to keep otters interested and active.

They give them fish that are frozen in blocks of ice.

At the very least, it's something to pass the time away while visitors to the Zoo oggle the otters and say things like 'Owww, how cute!"

Nom Nom Nom!

Cheeky Heron eats baby ducklings in front of their mother!

The cheek of it!

heron eating baby ducks

Check out this picture of a Cheeky Grey Heron snacking on some juicy wee baby ducklings, freshly snatched from in front of their terrified mother duck!

The heron just went right up to the family below as they were getting what appears to be a family portrait taken at the local pond.

mother duck with chicks

According to the Telegraph,  'The terrified mother duck tried desperately to shepherd her family of eight ducklings - born just the day before - into the safety of some reeds by the side of the lake in Dublin' So it's clearly a case of no luck for the Irish duck...

Quack and then baby duck number 2 was eaten

The Great Grey Heron then proceeded to taunt the fast diminishing duck family by swinging the duck from it's bill. It was definitely not a When Harry Met Sally Moment.

The defeat of the not so mighty ducks was snapped by duck lover Paul Hughes. "The first sign of the heron was the pandemonium it caused on the lake," explained Paul. "It swooped over the length of the lake and all the ducks started quaking loudly in alarm..."

It sounds like ducks need to sharpen up their game. Here's a picture of a seagull eating a baby duck. Hmmmn, they must be tasty wee birds eh? All this duck eating reminds of this picture of a heron eating a snake eating a fish! Of course, it's not all win win for Heron....

You'd need a homebrew made with finings after that I reckon!

Polar Bear fed a horse head at the Zoo

This is very unnatural shot of a polar bear eating a horse's head.

I'm picking this was a polar bear in a zoo and the horse's head was intercepted on route to the glue factory....

Reminds us of the time the lions got fed a horse... in a Zoo.

A brave leopard catches and eats a giant python!

This is something I've not seen before, a leopard eating an African Rock Python! And a massively large python at that!

Obviously the leopard can move a bit faster than the snake so it would seem he had the advantage but we can only imagine the tussle that went into bringing the snake down.

Python caught and eaten by a leopard

Perhaps the snake had died of natural causes?

It was suggested that this photo was taken in Yala National Park, Sir Lankia, however the snake appears to be an African python.

Leopards are actually known to be quite tough buggers - they can kill crocodiles with a bit of effort! And whatever you do, never try and corner a leopard, they will tear your scalp off!

We’ve found yet another reason to not visit Australia. If you weren’t up for the snakes that eat bats  or the hornets so big they eat spiders, be warned the snakes are actually so big they eat crocodiles:

Travis Corlis managed to capture the epic battle between a python and a crocodile at Queensland's Lake Moondarra, near the mining town of Mount Isa, Australia.

Admittedly the crocodile was only a baby being one metre in length but the struggle was impressive enough so much that Tiffany said, “We were sort of thinking that the snake had bitten off a little more than it could chew”. Ultimately the beast with no legs one and the crocodile was suffocated by the python’s death grip.

We've actually seen this kind of battle a few times before, notably this anaconda versus alligator from the Everglades. This Aussie python managed to drag a walleroo up a cliff and this one just wasn't that smart at all

One last one, it's not just Australian pythons you have to watch out for, this python from Bali ate a cat and then threw it up!
